EXPERIMENT 01 · TOUCH

The Pressure Ladder

The question

What changes when pressure changes, while the rest of the touch stays as familiar as possible?

Method

Begin with something familiar.

Begin with a kind of touch you already use regularly. Choose one location, one movement, and roughly one pace. Let that familiar touch become the baseline.

Then change only the pressure.

Move through a few distinct levels—from lighter than usual to firmer than usual—without worrying about making the steps exact. Spend enough time at each level to notice what changes before moving on.

You are not looking for the strongest pressure you can tolerate or a single correct setting.

What to Notice

Notice whether changing pressure alters:

  • the quality or clarity of the sensation
  • pleasure or arousal
  • comfort
  • your urge to change pace, movement, or location
  • what you prefer as arousal changes

Possible results

More pressure may create more intensity without creating more pleasure.

A lighter touch may become more interesting than expected. Your usual pressure may remain your favorite. Pressure may matter less than another variable entirely.

All of those are useful results.

a reason to stop

If increasing pressure causes pain, numbness, irritation, or discomfort, reduce it or stop. There is nothing to gain by pushing beyond a range that still feels comfortable enough to explore.
